This week’s blog post is written by the University of Bristol Ladies Hockey Club, as they hosted a charity day on 13 November. From taking over the @bristolunisport Instagram stories for the day, to bringing their hockey kit in a microwave, read what else they got up during the day!
The 13 November saw University of Bristol Ladies Hockey Club (UBLHC) takeover of Coombe Dingle, with four teams playing BUCS matches against opposition from Bath, Cardiff and Hartpury. But the fun didn’t stop there. We hosted a charity day alongside our matches, raising money for two Bristol-based charities that we have worked closely with before: Bristol Hygiene Bank and The Bridge, which offers support to individuals after experiencing sexual assault.
The ladies of UBLHC and our supporters really stepped it up, managing to amass a collection of hygiene products to be donated to Bristol Hygiene Bank, as pictured below. We also ran a raffle to raise money for The Bridge with some fabulous prizes kindly donated from businesses across Bristol, including the most coveted prize for any UBLHC member, a La Rocca (nightclub) tie. We managed to raise £169 through the raffle.
The day was filled with fun, in addition to hockey. We challenged our first year students to bring their kit in anything but a hockey bag, to which we saw the girls bring their sticks, shinpads and gum shields in everything from a street cone, cowboy boots and even a microwave! We wanted to create some entertainment for our supporters on the sidelines too, so during halftime of each match, we had songs, dances and hockey challenges.
Overall, our charity day was a resounding success and we look forward to being able to organise more similar events in the future.
