Pre-Season: What’s all the fuss about?

This week’s blog is written by our Performance Sport Manager, Matt Paine! Taking place from 21 August – 15 September 2023, Matt describes why pre-season is so important to our student athletes.

Sunshine, unlimited chance to play your sport, conditioning in the gym and field, and access to the best experts in Performance you say? And, we have not even talked about the Burrito Bar yet! Well, that’s what took place for five weeks in August and September at the University of Bristol.

Led by the Performance team of highly energised and motivated staff and coaches, with one key aim in mind… the students! Yes, our group of curious, interested and motivated club members. We had over 500 back on site across the fives weeks and all focused on preparing for the season ahead. The chance to spend time with friends, make new ones from other sports and also begin to access the club players for the upcoming season.

Pre-season is more than just sport, it’s about sense of belonging and being part of something special, unique and professional in each and every way. Giving students the best experience and level of support that we can offer, as well as a place to relax and socialise. Pre-season has grown year on year and with over 20 clubs back this summer, it shows that sports clubs are keen to maximise their club’s potential and get ahead of the new competitive season.

Alan Tyers, Head of the Men’s Football Club, said, “I have never seen so many boys back and so engaged. They have trained twice a day, attended the Strength and Conditioning gym, Nutrition and Sports Psychology sessions as well as breakfast and lunch. I mean, what’s not to like? They are professional players for five weeks!”.

Pre-season really is a magical time of the year for the whole Division of Sport, Exercise and Health and all the students who come back and work so hard. With BUCS beginning for many in October, let’s see how these weeks of effort will stand them in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead!
